Oedema
Oedema is water retention that affects many people. The water retention occurs as soon as water escapes from the blood vessel and/or lymphatic system and subsequently accumulates in the surrounding tissue. It usually affects the arms or legs, as well as the feet and ankles. But the hands or face can also become swollen due to the water retention.
Causes oedema
Water retention can have various causes. For example, the heat on hot summer days in combination with lack of exercise can cause the limbs to swell. Organ weaknesses (heart, kidneys, liver) or vein weaknesses can also cause oedema. In addition, there are possible side effects of medicines taken and allergic reactions.
In pregnant women, oedema is most common in late pregnancy. As a rule, however, they are usually harmless side effects of pregnancy. After the birth, the water retention can increase, but it goes down again by itself over a period of a few weeks. It doesn’t matter whether the water retention is harmless or a sign of a serious illness: For proper treatment, the cause should be clarified by a doctor.
Symptoms
Small oedemas are often not noticed because they do not cause any discomfort. A first indication of oedema is soft swellings that can be pressed in. People who suddenly gain weight for seemingly no reason can also suffer from oedema.
In right heart failure, the formation of oedema starts at the ankles and rises to the lower legs. In the case of thrombosis in the leg or pelvic area, the accumulation of water also begins in the ankle area. In pulmonary oedema, sufferers often cough up frothy, bloody fluid. Patients with oedema as a result of kidney disease often have puffy eyes and a bloated face.
Diagnosis
Oedema can be easily diagnosed by pressing on the swollen area with your finger. If it is oedema, a visible dent will remain and will only slowly disappear. Deep skin folds and skin discolouration are also important signs.
If oedema is suspected, the doctor will ask the patient about typical oedematous diseases. The extent of the swelling is also examined. In addition, various blood values give important indications of possible underlying diseases. Ultrasound, X-ray, computer tomography or echocardiography can be used to clarify the different types of oedema.
Treatment oedema
Oedema caused by heart, kidney or liver weakness is treated exclusively with water tablets, which ensure that the kidneys transport more water out of the body. Compression stockings or bandages are used for oedema that develops due to weak veins.
