Neck pain
Acute neck pain is widespread and usually no cause for concern. The pain is often triggered by muscle tension, for example after long periods of computer work, draughts or an awkward sleeping position. Acute neck pain usually subsides within 1 to 2 weeks.
However, if the pain lasts longer than three months, it is called chronic neck pain, which is related to psychological strain and stress.
Causes neck pain
Neck pain can have many causes. These include weak neck muscles and overstraining, wear and tear of the cervical spine, whiplash, as well as narrowing of the spinal canal or a slipped disc. In addition, neck pain can occur as a concomitant of inflammatory diseases of the spine, problems in the jaw joint or severe headaches.
It is often difficult to identify a clear cause for neck pain. The reason for this is that the bones, ligaments and nerves of the cervical spine are so close together that it is usually difficult to assess what ultimately triggers the complaints.
Symptoms
Neck pain can have different symptoms such as pain, stiffness and a feeling of tension in the neck. However, shoulders, the upper back or the arms can also be affected. In addition, there is pain when moving the head, headaches or earaches.
Occasionally, there may also be problems walking and loss of bladder or bowel control.
Diagnosis
The doctor first asks a few questions – such as whether you have had an accident before, where exactly it hurts and whether particular physical strain or severe stress could play a role. During the subsequent physical examination, the doctor palpates the neck and throat, examines the mobility of the head, the reflexes and the muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. An X-ray examination, computer tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is not necessary in most cases.
Treatment neck pain
Acute neck pain is usually treated with heat applications such as hot water bottles or heating pads. Stretching and strengthening exercises as well as massages are also recommended.
For severe chronic pain, pain treatment by trained psychotherapists can be useful.
Another therapy approach is the Spectra-H lux. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously working energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect sustainably alleviates pain and increases the chances of rapid rehabilitation.
This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid in the fight against neck pain.
