Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a gradual bone disease in which the bones become porous. Thus, throughout the skeleton, bone substance is broken down and the bone structure changes. The bones become unstable and run the risk of breaking at low levels of stress or even without an identifiable cause.
At least six million people in Germany are diagnosed with osteoporosis. The disease occurs mainly in older people. Women are affected significantly more often than men.
Causes osteoporosis
The body builds up bone mass until about the age of 30. Osteoporosis develops when the body has not built up enough bone mass by then or when it breaks it down again too quickly. In about one in 20 patients, osteoporosis occurs as a result of another disease (rheumatoid arthritis, hormone disorder, hyperthyroidism or chronic gastrointestinal disease).
In addition, the following risk factors increase the likelihood of osteoporosis: immobility, too little exercise, a diet low in calcium and vitamins, cigarettes and alcohol, being underweight and taking certain medications such as cortisone preparations.
Symptoms
Osteoporosis is often not noticeable. The disease usually only becomes noticeable when a bone fracture has already occurred. The deformation of the spine after a vertebral fracture puts the wrong strain on the back muscles. This results in back pain, hunchback formation (curvature of the spine) and a reduction in height.
Diagnosis
For diagnosis, the doctor will first ask about signs and risk factors of osteoporosis. He will also perform a bone density measurement. Less frequently, laboratory tests are done to rule out other bone diseases that also reduce bone density. A microscopic examination (bone biopsy) may also be performed to make a definite diagnosis.
Treatment osteoporosis
The therapy bundles different treatment approaches, which include medication, correction of nutritional deficiencies (calcium, vitamin D) and mobility measures. The treatment goal is to delay the progression of the disease and minimise the risk of bone fractures.
Another therapeutic approach is the Spectra-H lux. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously operating energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect provides lasting pain relief and increases the chances of rapid rehabilitation.
This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid in the fight against osteoporosis.
