Spinal cord injuries
An injury to the spinal cord is a serious damage that can usually be caused by a traffic accident, an accident during sports or other physical activities. In addition, the cause can also be a stroke or a neurological disease. The injury to the spinal cord leads to movement disorders – in the worst case, however, also to permanent paralysis. For this reason, affected persons should always be treated with the utmost care.
Causes spinal cord injuries
A spinal cord injury can be caused by traumatic damage (traffic accident, sports accident, fall, violent acts) or non-traumatic damage (multiple sclerosis, autoimmune diseases, spinal ischaemia, infectious myelitis and radiation myelopathy).
The injury to the spinal cord or its immediate surroundings – in contrast to spinal injuries, such as a vertebral fracture – are often irreversible and lead to paralysis.
Symptoms
Spinal cord injuries can lead to symptoms of failure of movements and bodily functions as well as nerve pain, which can occur individually or in combination. The paralysis that occurs can be complete – but residual functions can also be preserved.
Paralysis of the legs (paraplegia) or all extremities (tetraplegia), numbness and bladder and rectal dysfunction are common.
Diagnosis
The suspected diagnosis of spinal cord injury is made on the basis of the symptoms. As a rule, there are sensory disturbances or nerve deficits, pain and signs of paralysis symptoms. These are often detected in a neurological examination. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor will usually order a magnetic resonance imaging scan. In order to rule out other causes of nerve loss, such as infections or meningitis, a so-called lumbar puncture can be performed.
Treatment spinal cord injury
The options for treating a spinal cord injury depend primarily on its severity. A spinal cord concussion, for example, primarily requires a lot of rest and physical protection. In contrast, the effects of a spinal cord contusion are usually irreversible. In this case, only the accompanying symptoms (e.g. oedema, cysts, vertebral fractures, herniated discs) can be treated conservatively or surgically to reduce the pressure on the spinal nerves. Unfortunately, partial paralysis – or even complete paraplegia – cannot be cured by current means.
However, various aids, physiotherapeutic measures and training programmes enable those affected to lead a relatively self-determined life. Another – supportive – therapy approach is the Spectra-H lux. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously working energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect sustainably alleviates pain.
This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid for spinal cord injuries.
