Tailbone pain
The tailbone is the lowest part of the spine and consists of four to five vertebrae that are fused into one bone in most people. The pain in the tailbone can occur when standing up, sitting down, leaning forward, having a bowel movement or during sexual intercourse and can radiate to surrounding regions such as the hip, lumbar spine and anal area. It is also possible for the pain to be triggered in nearby areas of the body, such as organs, and radiate into the tailbone. In general, tailbone pain is rather rare, but it is a considerable burden for the affected patients.
Causes tailbone pain
Tailbone pain should not be confused with a herniated disc. The pain often occurs after traumatic events such as a fall or a difficult birth. However, mechanical stress on the tailbone due to long periods of sitting on hard surfaces can also cause the pain.
Other causes can be: rheumatic diseases (Bekhterev’s disease), tumours, cysts, periostitis, problems with the ligaments or muscles (tension).
Symptoms
The most common symptoms are pain between the lower spine and buttocks when sitting, standing up or leaning. The intensity of the pain varies. Tailbone pain can make everyday things like driving, bending or sitting difficult.
Many sufferers can only spend a few minutes in the same position before they are forced to change it to relieve the pain. Symptoms can last from a few days to several weeks – sometimes even months. In exceptional cases, the pain can also become chronic.
Diagnosis
In the case of tailbone pain, the doctor usually asks a few questions about the exact symptoms. This is followed by a physical examination in which pressure is applied to the tip of the tailbone to produce the pain. In order to exclude other possible causes for the tailbone pain, imaging examinations such as ultrasound examination, computer tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be helpful. If inflammation or a tumour is suspected, the doctor will also use a contrast medium to visualise the tailbone area in more detail.
Treatment tailbone pain
If the pain has not disappeared after several weeks and there is pain in the abdomen or lower back in addition to the pain in the tailbone, a doctor should be consulted. Once the diagnosis has been made, physiotherapy and massages can be helpful. If the symptoms persist, injections with cortisone (corticosteroids) or local anaesthetics can relieve the pain.
Another therapy approach is the Spectra-H lux. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously working energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect sustainably relieves pain and increases the chances of rapid rehabilitation.
This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid in the fight against tailbone pain.
