Schnappfinger

Snap finger

The so-called snap finger (also called trigger finger or quick finger) is an orthopaedic condition that occurs in about two percent of the population. The problem of trigger finger and the resulting pain with possible complications can significantly limit the lives of affected individuals.

What is a snap finger?

To understand exactly what the snap finger actually is, one must first illustrate how the fingers move on the hand. Simply put, the movement of the fingers occurs thanks to the tendons in the canals that are connected to the palm. However, over the years, the entrance area of these canals can become deformed due to strenuous and repetitive bending movements. As a result, the movements of the tendons become problematic and are accompanied by unpleasant pain.

In the final stage of the disease, bending the affected finger then causes the tendon to become trapped in flexion and movement of the finger is no longer possible on its own. The thumb, ring finger or little finger are usually affected – but other fingers can also become diseased.

The problem occurs mainly in women between 40 and 60 years of age or in people who suffer from diseases such as diabetes or arthritis. Occupations that rely on repetitive finger movements also increase the risk of the disease.

Symptoms

The symptoms of snapping finger usually begin without injury but arise from continuous heavy or repetitive use, especially with gripping and pinching movements. The symptoms are manifested by a tender lump on the palm, pain and morning stiffness. This is accompanied by locking or a kind of popping during finger movements. The stiffness and locking may worsen so that the fingers become locked in a bent position.

Diagnosis

Like many orthopaedic problems, snapping finger can be treated successfully if the problem is detected as early as possible.

Snapping finger is diagnosed by the doctor through a physical examination. The doctor will look for characteristic clicking movements and for bent or swollen finger nodules. In addition, opening and closing the hand and fingers is helpful. Radiological imaging is usually not necessary.

Treatment snap finger

In one out of three cases, the problem disappears by itself without the need for treatment. However, if therapy is necessary, the Spectra-H lux is one of the most effective solutions. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously working energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect provides lasting pain relief and increases the chances of rapid rehabilitation.

This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid in the fight against snapping finger.
