Patellar tendinitis
Patellar tendinopathy (also known as jumper’s knee or runner’s knee) occurs when the patellar tendon is irritated by unusual or violent strain. The condition – like cartilage damage – often occurs in top athletes and ambitious recreational athletes who practice a jump-intensive sport such as basketball or volleyball several times a week. But activities with a lot of „stop-and-go“ movements like tennis and football can also lead to patellar tendinitis. Patellar tendinitis is usually easy to diagnose because the pain can be clearly localised to the lower tip of the patella.
Causes patellar tendinitis
Patellar tendinitis has various causes. In addition to sports such as football, handball, tennis, squash and badminton, external factors can also play a role. For example, inappropriate footwear, incorrect technique during sports, too intensive training sessions on hard surfaces (asphalt) and unaccustomed stress are risk factors.
In addition to these causes, physical factors also lead to patellar tendinitis. For example, the elasticity of the tendons can decrease with age. But knee and foot malpositions, shortened tendons or muscles and congenital ligament weakness (ligament laxity) can also lead to patellar tendinopathy.
Symptoms
In the early stages of patellar tendinopathy, pain often occurs in the area of the patellar tendon during or after exertion such as climbing stairs, jogging or walking downhill. If the disease progresses, those affected usually also suffer from pain at rest. This considerably reduces the quality of life. Athletes are threatened with long breaks from training and competitions or even the abandonment of sport.
Diagnosis
Early diagnosis and individual therapy of patellar tendinitis are crucial for successful healing. A thorough medical history and examination by the doctor are therefore essential.
In addition to the physical examination, imaging procedures such as sonography (ultrasound) and, if necessary, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used.
Treatment patellar tendinitis
In order to create a basis for the successful therapy of patellar tendinitis, the stress situation should first be stopped. Depending on the intensity, a six to twelve-week break is advisable before the affected person slowly begins to exercise again.
The Spectra-H lux is suitable for supporting the therapy. The laser therapy device is based on four simultaneously working energy sources (soft laser, magnetic field, red and infrared light), whose combined effect sustainably alleviates pain and increases the chances of rapid rehabilitation.
This is because the Spectra-H lux acts on the treated area in different ways – including the release of endorphins and enzymes that have an anti-inflammatory effect. The fact that the treatment is non-invasive and without side effects makes the Spectra-H lux an indispensable aid in the fight against patellar tendinitis.
