Rheumatism (also rheumatoid arthritis) is considered a widespread disease and describes a variety of different diseases that mainly cause complaints in the musculoskeletal system. The best-known complaints are probably joint pain, which is why it is sometimes also referred to as „joint tearing“. With advanced rheumatism, those affected find it difficult to carry out simple activities such as personal hygiene, eating with a knife and fork or even fastening trousers.
Rheumatoid arthritis is sometimes confused with arthrosis. However, the difference between the two is that the pain is caused by the age-related degradation of joint cartilage and not by inflammation.
Causes rheumatism
Rheumatism is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the inner lining of the joints. Whether or not someone develops rheumatoid arthritis is also related, among other things, to family predisposition (genetic predisposition).
But age, infections, smoking and environmental influences such as sunlight also contribute to the development of rheumatism. As a rule, the joints at the base of the fingers or toes are affected first, but sometimes the elbow, ankle or knee are also affected. Joints close to the trunk, such as the shoulders or collarbone, can also become inflamed. Usually the same joints are affected on both sides of the body.
Symptoms
Which joints are affected by rheumatism varies. It usually depends on how pronounced the inflammatory reactions are and how far rheumatoid arthritis has progressed. Typical symptoms are warm, swollen and painful joints, lack of strength and even exhaustion. In addition, there are so-called rheumatic nodules.
Diagnosis
To diagnose rheumatoid arthritis, the doctor first asks about complaints such as painful joints, morning stiffness and general symptoms such as tiredness or fatigue.
The interview is followed by various examinations, such as a blood test.
Treatment rheumatism
In the case of bacterial arthritis, the joint is usually treated surgically. In the case of large joints, a joint endoscopy is also performed. During this procedure, the inflamed joint material is removed – sometimes together with the synovial membrane. The inflamed joint is then irrigated and cleaned.
