Tension headache
Tension headaches are the most common type of headache. Those affected often describe the pain as dull and pressing. According to the German Society of Neurology, more than half of adults and about one fifth of children and adolescents suffer from tension headaches at least once a year.
As a rule, this rather harmless type of headache occurs for the first time between the ages of 20 and 40. Tension headaches are less severe than migraines or cluster headaches. However, if they last longer, they can still be distressing for sufferers.
Causes tension headache
The causes of tension headaches are still largely unknown. Experts suspect a combination of factors, such as emotional stress, anxiety and restlessness, lack of sleep, poor posture and one-sided strain on the back muscles. Symptoms
Tension headaches are usually felt as dull and pressing. Most sufferers have pain all over their head, others have pain mainly in the forehead area. Some describe the pain as a squeezing ring around the skull. The tension headache can be mild to moderate and go away after a few minutes. Sometimes, however, the pain can last up to a week. Contrary to what lay people think, the pain does not get worse when you are physically active – for example, when doing sports. Accompanying symptoms such as sensitivity to light or nausea are absent.
Diagnosis
If you have frequent headaches, it is best to discuss this with a doctor. Through the medical history and the physical examination, the doctor can determine whether it is a tension headache or another type of headache. A neurological examination will check muscle strength and sensory perception, for example.
If, after the examination, it is not entirely clear whether another illness such as migraine, sinusitis, high blood pressure, tumours, bleeding or thrombosis is behind the pain, the doctor can carry out further examinations.

For mild tension headaches, many people manage without medication. Many sufferers relieve their pain with peppermint oil, which is dabbed on the forehead, temples or neck.
