Cluster headache
Cluster headaches are characterised by one-sided headaches that occur mainly in the area of the eye and temple. The pain can be so severe that sufferers often describe it as unbearable. During an attack, it is usually not possible to concentrate on other things or carry out everyday activities.
Because of the similarity to other types of headaches, such as migraines, cluster headaches often go undetected for years. This is particularly difficult for sufferers, as the pain severely limits their quality of life – in the long term, there is a risk of disability and depression.
Causes cluster headache
Only about 1 in 1000 people suffer from cluster headaches. This makes it a rare type of headache compared to tension headaches and migraines. The direct cause of cluster headaches is not known. Experts suspect that the nerve cells in certain areas of the brain that are responsible for regulating the day-night rhythm are overactive. However, heredity could also play a role.
It is known that – as for all other types of headache – there are individual triggers that can lead to an attack. However, these triggers only trigger attacks when the affected person is in an active phase of the disease, during which attacks generally occur frequently.
Symptoms
During a headache attack, there is a very strong, stabbing pain in the area of the eye, the temple and the adjacent part of the forehead within a short time. The affected eye is often red and watery. Other possible accompanying symptoms are a blocked or runny nose, reduced pupil, swollen or drooping eyelid and hypersensitivity to sounds or light.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis results from a detailed discussion with the doctor and a subsequent physical examination. During a neurological examination, the perception of touch and muscle strength are tested. To make sure that no other disease is the reason for the pain, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head is usually ordered.
