Frontal sinusitis
Frontal sinusitis (also: sinusitis frontalis) is a rarer form of sinusitis in which the mucous membrane in one or both sinuses is inflamed. Affected people usually have severe pain in the forehead area and a severe cold. The disease is either acute or chronic and can potentially occur at any age.
Causes frontal sinusitis
Frontal sinusitis involves an inflammatory reaction of the mucous membrane and a build-up of stuck, viscous secretions in the sinuses. Frontal sinusitis without a cold is therefore very rare.
The cause is often pathogens such as bacteria or viruses that attack the mucous membrane of the nasal cavities and thus lead to inflammation. From there, the pathogens enter the paranasal sinuses and infect the mucous membrane here as well. The infection leads to swelling of the mucous membrane and the production of purulent, viscous mucus.
Symptoms
In frontal sinusitis, severe stabbing pain develops over the affected side of the forehead within a few hours. The eye can also be affected. The discomfort increases as soon as the affected person bends their head forward, sneezes or even coughs. In addition, the inflamed area is sensitive to touch.
Other possible symptoms of sinusitis are a mucopurulent rhinitis, an impaired sense of smell and pain when chewing. If the inflammation spreads towards the eye, there is also the possibility that conjunctivitis may develop.
Diagnosis
The doctor asks the patient about the type, extent and duration of the complaints, among other things. This is followed by a physical examination, during which the doctor taps the front wall of the sinuses, for example. The doctor examines the inside of the nose by means of a nasal endoscopy (rhinoscopy). The doctor also examines the eyes. He looks for water retention in the upper eyelid and for signs of conjunctivitis.
With the help of a CT scan, the paranasal sinuses can be visualised in more detail.
Treatment frontal sinusitis
As with all forms of sinusitis, the treatment of sinusitis aims to restore the drainage of secretions and thus the ventilation of the affected sinuses. For this purpose, decongestant and expectorant drugs are usually prescribed. In the case of bacterial infections, antibiotics may also be prescribed.
