Slipped Disc
A herniated disc is a disease of the spine in which the soft nucleus (also: nucleus pulposus) protrudes from the disc, which is located between two adjacent vertebrae. The pain usually radiates into the leg. With a lot of luck, however, the symptoms will subside on their own within six weeks in most people.
Causes slipped disc
The intervertebral discs act like a shock absorber between the individual vertebrae. If you sit a lot, lift heavy loads, are overweight or put the wrong kind of strain on your back, the intervertebral discs will eventually no longer be able to withstand the strain.
Natural ageing processes also increase the risk of developing a slipped disc – because the older a person gets, the more the intervertebral discs lose their elasticity. The supporting fibrous ring becomes more brittle and gives way more quickly. Very rarely, an accident or serious injury can also lead to a tissue prolapse.
Symptoms
In many cases, a herniated disc is accompanied by pain and neurological symptoms. In some people, a herniated disc causes burning pain or tingling in the arms or legs, numbness or even paralysis in the extremities. In rare cases, unusual symptoms such as nausea also appear.
A slipped disc is often – just like osteoporosis – only discovered by chance during an examination.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history. The physical examination is usually accompanied by an imaging procedure to clearly diagnose a herniated disc. Since X-rays alone are usually not very informative, the doctor will also order a computer tomography (CT) and/or a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The so-called myelography is used rather rarely. However, since this procedure is not free of risks, it is only carried out if the doctor wants to assess the spinal canal as precisely as possible.
Treatment slipped disc
For more than 90 percent of patients, conservative treatment, i.e. therapy without surgery, is sufficient. This is especially true if the herniated disc causes pain or slight muscle weakness, but no other or more serious symptoms such as paralysis and disturbances in bladder or rectal function.
