Nail mycosis
Nail mycosis is a fungal infection of the nails that affects about one in eight people in Germany. Due to nail mycosis, diseased nails lose their shine and show a white, yellow or brown discolouration. In addition, the nail often thickens or becomes brittle. The infection often starts at the front edge of the nail and continues towards the nail plate.
Nail mycosis mainly affect the toenails, more rarely also the fingernails. The disease should be treated in any case, as the nails do not heal by themselves and healthy nails could be infected. Furthermore, nail mycosis can also be transmitted to other people.
Causes nail mycosis
Nail mycosis is mostly caused by so-called filamentous fungi, in rare cases also by yeast or mould fungi. The pathogens penetrate the nail bed via the free nail edge and then lift the nail plate there. As a result, the typical whitish-yellow discolouration of the nail surface occurs.
Small skin injuries in the area of the nail, for example caused by sport, can promote the disease. A previous athlete’s foot disease also increases the risk of nail mycosis.
Symptoms
Most often, the fungi infect the toenails, especially the nail of the big toe. Typical symptoms of nail fungus are white, yellowish or brownish discoloured nails, as well as cracks and fractures that extend to crumbling decay of the nails. These changes usually show on the tip or side of the nail. The affected part of the nail may detach from the nail bed. In some cases, sufferers experience unpleasant pain.
Diagnosis
To make the diagnosis, the doctor looks closely at the affected nails. In addition, a sample is taken. If it is indeed a fungal infection, doctors recognise fungal spores under the microscope – due to the special staining of the material. The subsequent determination of the fungus present requires a fungal culture, which is evaluated in the laboratory. In rare cases, the nail tissue is also examined in the laboratory.
Treatment nail mycosis
Nail mycosis can be treated locally with medicinal varnishes or creams directly on the nail. In addition, systemic treatment is possible by taking tablets. Both approaches can also be combined with each other.
